First Steps in Miniature Painting

Brushes, primers and patience: a gentle introduction to painting small figures.

DevelopmentSample article used for development. Not published editorial content.

Miniature painting can begin with one figure and a modest workspace. Before choosing supplies, read the model and paint manufacturers' guidance: material, preparation and ventilation requirements differ.

Check what is included

A model kit does not necessarily contain paints, brushes, glue or primer. Compare the documented contents and choose compatible materials. Keep blades and chemicals away from children and follow the safety instructions on every product.

Prepare a manageable workspace

Use stable lighting, protect the table and keep rinse water clearly separate from drinking water. Test unfamiliar paint on a suitable spare surface. Work in small stages rather than trying to complete every detail at once.

Practice before perfecting

Start with a simple colour plan and allow each stage the drying time stated by the manufacturer. Photograph the figure as you go if you want to see your progress. Your first project is a place to learn, not a standard you have to meet.
